Avoid Repeat Healthcare Ransomware Attacks

As we have seen over the last month in the fallout of the ransomware attack on CommonSpirit Health, cyber attacks on the healthcare industry are especially damaging. Not only do they impact the hospital’s ability to operate normally, but it also affects their ability to effectively serve patients. The attack has caused massive disruptions across multiple states in delaying surgeries and other patient care.

November is Infrastructure Security Month and healthcare is one of the 16 critical infrastructures defined by CISA.

We know that the likelihood of a second attack becomes greater after a first successful attack, Healthcare IT Security has three tips to avoid repeat healthcare ransomware attacks.

1. Ensure Proper Remediation – Make sure that your systems are clear of threats and rebuilt properly during recovery to limit exposure to a second attack
2. Vulnerability & Patch Management – After an attack, take time to understand your vulnerabilities. Having a network risk assessment completed can help find other areas that are vulnerable to another cyber attack.
3. Learn From Peers – When other healthcare (or any) organizations in your sector are attacked, find case studies and other information as a guide of how it could happen to your organization.

Ransomware

CommonSpirit Health confirmed that it suffered IT outages as a result of an unspecified IT security incident that began on October 3. The incident impacted multiple facilities within the health system, forcing some hospitals to take their EHR systems offline.

CommonSpirit Health is one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the US, with more than 1,000 care sites and 140 hospitals in 21 states

As a result of this issue, some patient appointments were rescheduled. 
The hospital had to divert ambulances away from its emergency department for a short period of time.
