More Than Backups Needed to Stop Ransomware

Ransomware attacks continue to evolve in a more dangerous direction and increase in sophistication.

Double and triple-extortion techniques are becoming more reliable techniques for cyber threat actors in order to find victims to meet their ransom demands.

Backups are a good way to protect against having data encrypted and corrupted. But cyber criminals are bypassing encryption and focusing on stealing your data using exfiltration and then threatening to leak the data on top of already stealing it. 

Paying the ransom is always recommended against as it only increases the success of cyber criminals and creates more future attacks.  

Ransomware can often evade detection, and thus, additional ransomware specific controls and tools are needed to protect having your network breached.

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles  confirmed it is investigating a cybersecurity incident shortly after the LockBit ransomware gang claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on the agency. HACLA provides affordable housing to more than 19,000 low-income families across Los Angeles, and was added to LockBit’s dark web leak site on December 31. The listing claims that LockBit has stolen 15 terabytes of data from the housing agency.

Screenshots posted by the cybercriminals suggest the data includes the personal details of people who sought housing assistance from the city, as well as data from the city agency’s payroll, human resources and accountancy files.
